The Red Ring of Death – The Problem
I’ve been fixing Xbox 360s since the red ring of death first became apparent, and I too, have followed the guides that you see on the internet. Let me be perfectly clear, these guides DO WORK, but they only work TEMPORARILY.
To understand why they work only temporarily, you first need to understand what the problem is. To understand that, I’ll refer you to this image.

I want you to focus on the top image. This image is a side view of the xbox 360. The bottom is the case, the green line is the motherboard. Notice on the far left where the board touches the first metal piece how it’s lower than the standoff? This causes major flexing in the motherboard. In the middle of the picture there’s a chip of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Underneath the motherboard there’s this piece of metal called an X-Clamp. That X-Clamp actually pushes UP on the bottom of the GPU. The heatsink, which is used to remove heat from the chip, applies pressure down on the chip while the X-Clamp pushes up on it. Finally, there’s another standoff on the right that pushes the board up.
Still following me? I hope so.
Based on the image, you can see that the green line is going up and down. This is bad. Notice the little dots underneath the chip (right above the X-Clamp in the middle)? Those dots are pieces of solder. Those pieces of solder are what holds the chip in place to connect to the motherboard. When the board flexes, these pieces of solder don’t stay in the correct places they need to be, so the solder joints break when the Xbox cools. When the xbox turns on again — BAM — Red ring of death.
So that’s the problem. So Mario, why don’t current guides work? I’ll show you.
